Currently, we are looking to fill the following student vacancy:

Student Assistant, Natural Heritage, Forest & Trails

  • Contract, full-time
  • May 4, 2026, to August 28, 2026
  • Hourly rate: $18.75 – $20.29
  • Work Locations: 555 Courthouse Road, Cobourg / Beagle Club Road, Harwood

Reporting to the Natural Heritage Manager, you will provide support for the trail, forestry and ecological stewardship programs in the Northumberland County Forest. You will assist in the maintenance, repair, and construction of recreational trails as well as timber harvesting and habitat restoration projects.

Duties & responsibilities

  • Brushing and pruning;
  • Signage installation and maintenance;
  • Trail inspection and maintenance;
  • Timber cruising;
  • Tree marking;
  • Ecological restoration;
  • Planting and invasive species removal.

Qualifications & skills

  • Post-secondary education related to trails, forestry or ecological restoration is preferred;
  • First Aid/CPR training is considered an asset;
  • Ability to work individually and as a team player;
  • Experience working outdoors and in various climatic conditions;
  • Good communication and time management skills.
  • You must be a fully licensed Class G driver and have appropriate safety footwear.

An acceptable driver’s abstract (3-year uncertified driver’s record) must be submitted with your application. Resumes submitted without an acceptable driver’s abstract will not be reviewed.

Eligibility requirements

A student is defined as a person between the ages of 18-30 at the start of the employment; registered as a full-time student in the current academic year (2025/2026) and intends to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year (2026/2027). As a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment, you are legally entitled to work in Canada. You must be available to work from May 4 to August 28, 2026.
