Event: National Indigenous History Month and National Indigenous Peoples Day

Date: June 2026

Whereas Northumberland County acknowledges that it is situated on the ancestral lands of and traditional and treaty territory of the Michi Saagiig Anishinaabeg, the original stewards of these lands and waters; and

Whereas today, this region remains home to the Mississauga and Chippewa Nations, collectively known as the Williams Treaties First Nations, who are recognized as the modern Treaty and Aboriginal Rights holders in this area and continue to uphold their deep connection to the land, along with a legacy of environmental stewardship and responsibility; and

Whereas June is recognized in Canada as Indigenous Peoples Month, providing an opportunity to honour and celebrate the rich histories, enduring cultures, resilience, and significant contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples; and

Whereas June 21 is observed as National Indigenous Peoples Day, a time to recognize and amplify Indigenous voices while fostering greater understanding, respect, and appreciation for diverse cultures, traditions, and heritage of Indigenous communities across Turtle Island; and

Whereas Northumberland County reaffirms its commitment to building respectful relationships with Williams Treaties First Nations, grounded in cultural awareness, mutual respect, and the ongoing efforts towards reconciliation, with continued efforts to advance equity, diversity, and inclusion;

Now Therefore Be It Resolved That I, Warden Robert Crate, on behalf of Northumberland County Council do hereby proclaim June 2026 to be ‘Indigenous History Month’ and June 21, 2026, to be ‘Indigenous Peoples Day’ in Northumberland County.”

Dated this 20th day of May, 2026

Warden, Bob Crate
