Event: International Overdose Awareness Day

Date: August 31, 2026

Whereas the Haliburton, Kawartha Lakes, Northumberland (HKLN) Drug Strategy recognizes August 31 as International Overdose Awareness Day, the world’s largest annual campaign to end drug poisonings and to honour, without stigma, the lives of those impacted by substance use and those who have died; and

Whereas the 2026 theme, “25 Years. Still Needed.”, reflects 25 years of bringing communities together to remember those lost to drug poisonings and to take action to save lives; and

Whereas International Overdose Awareness Day highlights the ongoing public health crisis caused by an unregulated and toxic drug supply, and encourages meaningful action and open dialogue around evidence-based strategies to prevent drug poisonings, reduce harm, and support recovery; and

Whereas the campaign also recognizes the profound grief experienced by families, friends, and communities who continue to be affected by substance-related harms and losses; and

Whereas communities across Haliburton, Kawartha Lakes, and Northumberland remain committed to reducing stigma, supporting compassionate care, and advancing policies and programs that protect health and save lives;

Therefore Be It Resolved That I, Warden Robert Crate, on behalf of Northumberland County Council, do hereby proclaim August 31, 2026 as International Overdose Awareness Day in support of awareness, remembrance, compassion, and collective action to address the ongoing overdose crisis.”

Dated this 12th day of August, 2026

Warden, Bob Crate
