Northumberland County and local municipalities launch annual road line painting program
Cobourg, ON – July 15, 2026 – Northumberland County and local municipalities are preparing for the annual road line painting season, an important maintenance program that helps keep roads safe and clearly marked for all users.
Beginning this week, crews will start refreshing pavement markings across the County and within local municipalities. These markings play a critical role in guiding traffic, improving visibility, and enhancing safety for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.
Northumberland County maintains nearly 500 kilometres of roadway, with pavement markings requiring regular renewal to remain visible and effective. Municipal road networks across the County are also being refreshed to ensure clear lane delineation, traffic guidance, and safe navigation for active transportation users.
Line painting operations are highly specialized and require crews to travel at reduced speeds to ensure accurate application and allow sufficient time for the paint to dry properly.
“Fresh, visible pavement markings are a key component of a safe transportation network,” said Denise Marshall, Director of Public Works. “We appreciate the patience and cooperation of motorists as crews complete this important work. By slowing down, maintaining a safe following distance, and respecting work zones, drivers help protect both road workers and fellow road users.”
Motorists are reminded to use caution around line painting operations and maintenance vehicles. Passing line painting equipment can create safety risks and may result in paint splashing onto vehicles. Freshly applied pavement markings also contain reflective glass beads that improve visibility at night; driving over wet paint can damage these markings and reduce their effectiveness.
Safety tips for motorists
- Slow down and maintain a safe following distance from maintenance vehicles.
- Never attempt to pass line painting operations or road maintenance crews.
- Avoid driving on freshly painted pavement markings.
- Do not cross wet paint, as this can damage the markings and reduce their reflective properties.
- Follow all traffic control signs, devices, and instructions from road crews.
- Stay alert and be prepared for temporary delays in active work areas.
Northumberland County and its municipal partners thank residents and visitors for their patience and cooperation as crews complete this important seasonal maintenance work. By working together, we can help keep roads safe, visible, and well-maintained for everyone.
