Cobourg, ON – July 23, 2026 – Northumberland County will begin urban renewal construction in Grafton on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, with work expected to continue through to October. The project will improve roadway conditions, enhance pedestrian safety, and replace aging infrastructure in Grafton.
The rehabilitation project is a collaborative effort between Northumberland County and the Township of Alnwick/Haldimand to address identified infrastructure needs while improving safety for pedestrians and motorists.
Construction will take place along County Road 2 starting around the Haldimand Community Memorial Arena to 150 metres east of Lyle Street South (County Road 23), including Lyle Street South (County Road 23) intersection north for 200 metres.
Project improvements include:
- Relocating the existing pedestrian crossover at Old Danforth Road to the east side of the intersection, complete with overhead and advanced signage, flashing beacons and stop bars.
- Installing a new pedestrian crossover at the Haldimand Community Memorial Arena with overhead and advance signage, flashing beacons and stop bars.
- Constructing new sidewalk along Old Danforth Road in front of local businesses, including the re-configuration of on-street parking from County Road 2 to approximately 60m south of County Road 2.
- Replacing sections of the existing storm sewer infrastructure.
- Removing and replacing the full-depth asphalt roadway.
- Completing minor curb and gutter replacements.
- Applying new pavement markings upon completion of construction.
“The Grafton urban road reconstruction project is an investment in the safety and long-term livability of the community,” states Peter Deshane, Associate Director of Engineering. “By coordinating roadway rehabilitation with pedestrian safety improvements and infrastructure upgrades, we’re able to deliver lasting benefits for residents, businesses and visitors while making the most of this construction window.”
To minimize impacts on the travelling public, at least one lane of traffic will remain open throughout construction hours, with two lanes reopened outside of working hours whenever possible. Motorists should expect temporary lane closures, reduced speeds and periodic delays while work is underway.
Residents, businesses and visitors are encouraged to plan for additional travel time, obey all construction signage, and use caution when travelling through the work zone. Access to local businesses and properties will be maintained throughout construction.
