Think before you dig: Northumberland County marks Dig Safe Month
Cobourg, ON – April 15, 2026 – April marks Dig Safe Month, and Northumberland County is joining municipalities across Ontario in promoting awareness around safe excavation practices. Ahead of today’s Council meeting, County Warden Bob Crate, alongside Director of Public Works Denise Marshall, raised the Dig Safe Month flag on the County’s community flagpole, underscoring the importance of this annual safety initiative.
From small landscaping projects to large-scale construction, understanding what lies beneath the surface is a critical first step. Failing to do so can lead to injuries, utility interruptions, and expensive damage. Dig Safe Month serves as a reminder to residents, businesses, and contractors alike to take proper precautions before starting any digging activity – beginning with a locate request through Ontario One Call.
“As we head into the busy spring season, many residents are taking on outdoor projects,” says Warden Bob Crate. “Taking a few minutes to request a locate before digging is a simple step that protects people, property, and essential services across our community.”
