Proclamation – National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, September 30, 2026

“Whereas the Government of Canada has designated September 30 as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, in response to Call to Action #80 of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, to recognize the profound harm and intergenerational trauma caused by the Residential School System in Canada; and

Whereas September 30 is also widely recognized as Orange Shirt Day, a day to honour the Indigenous children who never returned home, recognize the resilience, strength, and dignity of Survivors, their families, and Indigenous communities; and reaffirm that Every Child matters; and

Whereas Indigenous communities across Canada continue to lead efforts to uncover the truth of the residential school system, honour missing children, support Survivors and their families, and advance healing according to their own laws, traditions, and priorities; and

Whereas acknowledging on the ongoing legacy and lasting impacts of the residential school system, is essential to advancing truth, understanding, healing, and reconciliation; and

Whereas the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission provide important guidance for individuals, communities, and all levels of government in the ongoing pursuit of healing, mutual respect, and meaningful reconciliation; and

Whereas Northumberland County affirms its commitment to strengthening respectful relationships with the Michi Saagig Asnihinaabeg, including the Williams Treaties First Nations, responding meaningfully to the Calls to Action that relate to municipalities, supporting local initiatives that advance reconciliation in partnership with Indigenous Peoples, and fostering relationships built on respect, understanding, and collaboration;

Now Therefore Be It Resolved That I, Warden Robert Crate, on behalf of Northumberland County Council do hereby proclaim September 30, 2026 to be ‘National Day for Truth and Reconciliation’ in Northumberland County;

Further Be It Resolved That County Council encourages all residents, member municipalities, organizations, businesses, and institutions throughout Nortumberland County to observe this day through reflection, learning, and meaningful action, honouring the children who never returned home, recognizing the experiences of Survivors, and working together toward a more just, respectful, and inclusive future.”
