Roads Maintenance & Construction

Update #4: December 30, 2022 - 9:00 a.m.

The Significant Weather Event in Northumberland County has concluded, with service level standards for winter maintenance operations reinstituted. As clean-up from the recent storm progresses, community members are cautioned to use the road network according to road and weather conditions.

Update #3: December 24, 2022 - 10:25 a.m.

The Significant Weather Event remains in effect with officials advising against all non-essential travel and reminding motorists and pedestrians that if you absolutely must travel, please do so cautiously and according to conditions.

Plows have been out since early this morning, however the ongoing storm is causing snow to build up again quickly. Public Works is advising that winter maintenance operations will take longer that usual. With icy conditions and limited visibility, please stay home, where possible.

Update #2: December 23, 2022 – 9:55 p.m.

Due to continued forecasted storm conditions for Saturday, December 24, please note that all Community Recycling Centres (CRCs)—including the Bewdley, Seymour, and Brighton CRCs—will be closed for the day.

CRCs are anticipated to reopen for business as usual next week— on Tuesday, December 27 at 8:30 a.m. for the Brighton and Bewdley CRCs, and on Friday, December 30 at 8:30 a.m. for the Seymour CRC.

Update #1: December 23, 2022 – 4:18 p.m.

Northumberland County has declared a Significant Weather Event. With rapidly deteriorating conditions due to a combination of snow, hazardous winds, and falling temperatures, this declaration serves to notify the community that snow clearing operations may take longer to complete than usual. Community members are advised to stay off the roads, where possible, and otherwise to drive with significant caution.

“Crews continue with winter maintenance operations along the County’s 900 lane kilometre road network. However, we are declaring a Significant Weather Event to advise the community that operations are expected to be delayed compared to typical levels of service, due to the severity of the ongoing storm,” says Director of Public Works Denise Marshall. “Motorists are advised to stay home and only use the roads for necessary travel. Visibility is reduced so adjust driving accordingly.”

Municipalities can declare a Significant Weather Event under the Municipal Act, 2001, O. Reg. 239/02, when a weather hazard is approaching or occurring and has the potential to pose a significant danger to users of the highways over which they have authority. During a Significant Weather Event, residents are advised to use roads with caution and are reminded that typical winter maintenance service levels may not be met.

Please note that, as a result of deteriorating weather conditions, the County has also closed all Community Recycling Centres for the remainder of the day.

“Our sincerest thanks go out to our  municipal staff—and all workers in the broader community—who are delivering essential services throughout this storm and over the holiday weekend to keep our residents safe, and to deliver the services on which our community relies,” states County Warden Mandy Martin.
