County implements temporary waste disposal measures following ice storm
April 2, 2025
Cobourg, ON – April 2, 2025 – In response to the severe ice storm that impacted southern Ontario between March 29 and March 30, 2025, Northumberland County is introducing temporary waste disposal measures to assist community members with storm-related clean-up. These measures aim to support those affected by providing options for debris and damaged materials disposal.
- Tipping Fee Rebate: Effective immediately, until May 2nd, residents can apply for a Tipping Fee Rebate to offset any waste disposal-related costs incurred at Community Recycling Centres (CRCs) as a direct result of the ice storm that occurred this past weekend. Residents can apply for the rebate on fees paid at CRCs by submitting a Redemption Request Form, available at Northumberland.ca/Garbage, along with a copy of weigh scale receipts. Residents are reminded that leaf and yard waste can be disposed of at any County CRC with no charge for loads weighing less than 500 kg (1,100 lbs).
- Temporary increase in garbage set-out limits: Until April 17th, garbage limits for curbside waste collection will increase from 2 bags to 4 bags. Bag weights will remain the same, with each bag of garbage able to weigh 20kgs (44lbs). Each bag of garbage set out for collection will require a waste tag.
In addition to these temporary measures, Leaf and Yard Waste collection kicks off for the season next week in Area 1. To ensure efficient removal, residents are reminded of the following guidelines for leaf and yard waste set-out:
- Only grass clippings, branches, twigs, leaves, and plant material (all soil removed) are accepted at curbside. Sod, soil, stumps, logs, root balls, rocks, or stones are not accepted.
- Tie brush into bundles no longer than 1 meter in length (3 ft), with materials no larger than 5 cm (2”) in diameter.
- Each bag or bundle must weigh no more than 20 kg (40 lbs).
