International Women’s Day is celebrated globally on March 8. This day is dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women, while also acknowledging the ongoing work needed to advance gender equality worldwide.

2026 Theme: “Give to Gain”

This year’s theme, “Give to Gain,” highlights a collaborative, action-oriented approach to fostering gender equality. By supporting one another, sharing knowledge, mentoring, and investing in inclusive opportunities, we strengthen our entire community.

International Women’s Day is a time to celebrate the achievements of women and to ensure that women in our community have access to the supports, services, and opportunities they deserve. Below you’ll find local organizations and resources serving women and families across Northumberland County.

Employment, education & economic empowerment

Business & Entrepreneurship Centre Northumberland

Offers free business advisory services, training, and mentorship programs to support women entrepreneurs and small business owners at all stages.

Fleming College

Provides continuing education, skills training, career development programs, and academic upgrading opportunities.

Loyalist College – Port Hope Campus

Offers career-focused diploma programs, continuing education, and skills training opportunities that support workforce development and lifelong learning.

Leadership & women in government

Association of Municipalities of Ontario

Provides resources, research, and initiatives that support women in local government, including leadership development, governance training, and information to encourage women’s participation in municipal politics across Ontario.

Inclusive & community supports

Northumberland County is committed to supporting women of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences, including Indigenous women, women of colour, newcomers, women with disabilities, and members of 2SLGBTQ+ community.

Provides programs and services that support seniors and adults, including wellness programs, transportation, and community connection initiatives.

Offers legal assistance for family law, domestic violence cases, immigration matters and more.

Northumberland Community Legal Centre

Provides free legal services for eligible low-income residents, including support related to housing, income security, and human rights.

Mental health & well-being

Canadian Mental Health Association – Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge

Offer mental health counselling, crisis services, addiction supports, and community programs for women and families.

Five Counties Children’s Centre

Provides treatment and support services for children and youth, including development and rehabilitation services that support families and caregivers.

Provides emergency shelter, 24/7 crisis support, counselling, transitional housing, and prevention programs for women and children experiencing violence.

Parenting & family supports

Northumberland County Community and Social Services

Information on child care fee subsidy, housing support, Ontario Works, and other family assistance programs.
