Statement by Warden Bob Crate on plans for winter warming room and increased shelter spaces
Cobourg, ON – October 7, 2022 – “Northumberland County recognizes that a community march in honour of World Homeless Day is planned for Tuesday, October 11, to conclude at the County building in Cobourg.
Organizers have inquired about the availability of a warming room for unsheltered residents as the cold weather approaches. I can confirm that the County is once again coordinating a warming room for this winter, with logistics and provider arrangements currently being finalized in collaboration with homeless system partners, and with feedback from community members with lived experienced. More information will be shared as soon as details are finalized.
Beyond warming room availability, expanded emergency shelter system capacity remains in place today thanks to Social Services Relief Funding from the Province, with overflow spaces available through the local motel system should Transition House Shelter become full. A recent investment from the Government of Canada through the Reaching Home initiative will enable a further increase in shelter system capacity this winter, funding additional motel rooms, along with expanded diversion and housing support services.
Northumberland County encourages those in immediate need to access emergency shelter and diversion supports through Transition House Shelter by visiting the shelter at 10 Chapel Street, Cobourg or calling 905-372-9562.”
