Event: National Indigenous History Month & National Indigenous Peoples Day

Date: June 2025

Whereas Northumberland County acknowledges that it is situated on the ancestral lands of the Michi Saagiig (Mississauga Anishinaabeg) and the Williams Treaties First Nations, and serves as a gathering place for Indigenous Peoples from across the region and throughout Canada; and

Whereas June is celebrated as Indigenous Peoples Month in Canada, providing an important opportunity to honour and deepen our understanding of the rich histories, enduring strength, and significant achievements of Indigenous Peoples across our country; and

Whereas June 21 is observed as National Indigenous peoples Day, a time to uplift and centre Indigenous Voices, fostering a deeper respect for and connection to Indigenous cultures, traditions, and heritage across Turtle Island; and

Whereas we renew our collective commitment, both as an organization and as a community, to actively pursue the building of respectful, sustainable relationships with Indigenous communities, grounded in cultural understanding, mutual respect, and the ongoing journey of reconciliation, with a focus on advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion;

Now Therefore Be It Resolved That I, Warden Brian Ostrander, on behalf of Northumberland County Council do hereby proclaim the month of June to be ‘Indigenous Peoples Month’ and June 21st, 2025 to be ‘Indigenous Peoples Day’ in Northumberland County.”

Dated this 21 day of May, 2025

Warden, Brian Ostrander
