Proclamation – National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, September 30, 2025

“Whereas the Government of Canada has designated September 30th as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, in response to Call to Action #80 of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, to recognize the profound harm and intergenerational trauma caused by the Indian Residential School System in Canada; and 

Whereas this day serves to honour the memory of the Indigenous Children who never made it home, and to pay tribute to the resilience, dignity, and strength of survivors, their families, and Indigenous communities; and

Whereas public recognition of this painful chapter in our national history, along with the continued impacts of residential schools, is essential to the reconciliation process in Canada; and

Whereas the Calls to Action issued by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission provide critical direction for individuals, communities, and all levels of government in the pursuit of truth, healing, and reconciliation; and

Whereas Northumberland County affirms its commitment to responding meaningfully to the Calls to Action that relate to municipalities, and to supporting local initiatives that advance reconciliation in collaboration with Indigenous Peoples, and to building meaningful relationships founded on respect, understanding and partnership

Now Therefore Be It Resolved That I, Warden Brian Ostrander, on behalf of Northumberland County Council do hereby proclaim September 30 to be ‘National Day of Truth and Reconciliation’ in Northumberland County and

Further Be it Resolved That County Council encourages all residents, member municipalities, organizations, and institutions within Northumberland County to observe this day with thoughtful reflection and meaningful action, acknowledging the truths of our past and working together toward a more just, respectful, and inclusive future.”
