Event: International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

Date: November 25 – December 10, 2025

Whereas the United Nations General Assembly officially recognized the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women in 1993, marking a global commitment to address and end gender-based violence; and

Whereas November 25 serves as a solemn tribute to the Mirabal sisters of the Dominican Republic, whose assassination in 1960 galvanized international action and awareness of violence rooted in gender inequality; and

Whereas gender-based violence continues to be one of the most persuasive and deeply rooted manifestations of gender inequality, disproportionately affecting women, girls, and gender-diverse individuals; and

Whereas the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, observed annually from November 25 to December 10, is a global initiative urging collective action to prevent and end violence in all its forms; and

Whereas this global movement calls upon individuals, communities, and governments to speak out, raise awareness, and take concrete steps to eliminate gender-based violence, with a focus on the rights and safety of women, girls, and 2SLGBTQ+ communities; and

Whereas Northumberland County reaffirms its unwavering support for ending femicide and all forms of violence rooted in gender discrimination and oppression;

Now Therefore Be It Resolved That I, Warden Brian Ostrander, on behalf of Northumberland County Council do hereby proclaim November 25, 2025 to be ‘International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and November 25 to December 10, 2025, to be the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence’ in Northumberland County.”

Dated this 19th day of November 2025

Warden, Brian Ostrander
