Cobourg, ON – August 14, 2025 – Northumberland County continues to unlock funding to enhance services while minimizing impact to taxpayers. Between January and June 2025, the County successfully secured $407,918 in external grant funding through competitive application processes. These funds are supporting key projects and initiatives aligned with the County’s 2023-2027 Community Strategic Plan.

“The impact of these grants extends beyond dollars – they represent strengthened partnerships, community-led innovation, and tangible improvements to quality of life across Northumberland,” says Warden Brian Ostrander. “Each successful application reflects the County’s commitment to collaboration, strategic planning, and meeting the evolving needs of our community members. We are grateful to our funding partners for their investments in our community.”

During the first six months of 2025, seven funding applications were confirmed as successful, including:

  • $158,400 from the Reaching Home: Rural and Remote – Mainstream Organization funding stream to support the Dine With Dignity program. This initiative, delivered by the Transition House Coalition of Northumberland, will run over three years and focus on addressing food insecurity, fostering skill-building, and supporting the cultural needs of individuals and families experiencing or at risk of homelessness.
  • $76,993 from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Climate Ready Plans and Processes fund. This funding is being used to develop Northumberland County’s first Climate Change Adaptation and Resiliency Plan.
  • $66,525 from the Reaching Home: Rural and Remote – Capital Projects funding stream for the purchase of an accessible van. With this investment, the Transition House Coalition of Northumberland will enhance safe, inclusive transportation options for clients.
  • $50,000 from the Cameco Sponsorship Fund to support the Northumberland County Archives and Museum (NCAM) inaugural ‘Michi Saagiig Language’ exhibition, over two years. As a part of Cameco’s contribution, a public research space within the new NCAM facility will be named the ‘Cameco Reading Room.’
  • $50,000 from Emergency Management Ontario: Community Emergency Preparedness Grant plus $5,000 from Enbridge: Fueling Futures fund to support the purchase and installation of two standby generators at the Northumberland County Public Works Yard in Cobourg, ensuring continuity during grid power outages.
  • $1,000 from the Cameco Sponsorship Fund to support the delivery of the Golden Plough Lodge (GPL) long-term care home’s Wellness & Health Fair, held on May 19, 2025. Hosted by the GPL Peer Support team in collaboration with Cameco and The Tema Foundation, the event welcomed residents, families, and staff for a day focused on self-care, mental health, and holistic well-being.

The County also received confirmation of a successful pre-application with the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Sustainable Affordable Housing Study Grant. This milestone recognizes the County’s eligibility for the grant and allows submission of a full application. The proposed project would fund feasibility studies for the construction of an energy-efficient, affordable housing development at 123 King Street East, in Colborne.

Northumberland County remains committed to pursuing strategic funding opportunities that reflect regional priorities, improve community outcomes, and alleviate pressure on the local tax base.
