Join in the Fight Against Hunger—30 Ways in 30 Days to Make a Difference

August 28, 2025

Cobourg, ON – August 28,  2025 – This September, community members are invited to join the fight against food insecurity by participating in Northumberland County’s ‘30 Ways in 30 Days’ Hunger Action Month initiative. This 30-day challenge encourages residents to take small, meaningful actions each day to support local food banks, reduce food waste, and raise awareness of hunger in our community.

“Hunger affects thousands of individuals and families across Northumberland every year,” says the County’s Director of Health and Human Services, Glenn Dees. “Hunger Action Month is an opportunity for all of us to come together, take action, and support the food banks and programs that are making a difference in our community.”

Between April 1, 2024, and March 31, 2025, over 1,000,000 unique individuals accessed food banks in Ontario, accounting for over 7 million visits. Locally, in 2024, 5,889 Northumberland community members were supported by local food banks – 30% of whom were under the age of 18. In total, there were 65,164 visits, representing an 11% increase compared to 2023.

Across Canada, Food Banks Canada leads national hunger awareness efforts, while Feed Ontario coordinates a provincial response. In Northumberland, the County’s Food 4 All Warehouse and twelve local food banks work together to distribute food, provide support, and champion awareness campaigns like Hunger Action Month.

On August 13, County Council officially proclaimed September as Hunger Action Month in Northumberland County, recognizing the importance of community-wide engagement in the fight against hunger and poverty.
