Innovation in action: Northumberland Paramedics showcase life-saving technology

May 21, 2025

Cobourg, ON – May 21, 2025 – As Paramedic Services Week continues, at today’s County Council meeting, Northumberland Paramedics simulated a real-time emergency response featuring an innovative new technology that will be standard on local ambulances starting this summer.

Northumberland paramedics participating in the mock scenario The demonstration included CPR, use of a public automated external defibrillator (AED) to support early defibrillation, transitioning to use of paramedic therapeutic devices, and other life-saving paramedic interventions.

At the core of this demonstration was a new automated, hands-free CPR device that significantly enhances traditional CPR delivery. This advanced technology allows paramedics to deliver consistent, high-quality chest compressions in a variety of challenging environments – including confined spaces, during extrication, and safety while transporting patients.

“Our paramedics are committed to innovation and excellence in pre-hospital care,” says Chief of Northumberland Paramedics Susan Brown. “This advanced technology represents another step forward in strengthening the chain of survival. It ensures our teams can continue delivering the highest level of care, even in the most complex situations, ultimately improving patient outcomes across our region.”

“Thank you to our paramedics for today’s impactful demonstration, and for your truly impressive work across our predominantly rural community,” states Warden Brian Ostrander. “As we continue to celebrate Paramedic Services Week, we commend you for staying on the leading edge of technology and for your ongoing commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of our residents.”

Paramedic Services Week runs from May 18 to 24, recognizing the vital role paramedics play in our communities every day.

A recording of today’s meeting of County Council, which will include this demonstration, will be available in the coming days at Northumberland.ca/Council. Community members are encouraged to watch and see the innovation in action.
