Statement from Warden Brian Ostrander

“It is with deep respect that we pay tribute to former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney.

As Canada’s 18th Prime Minister, he led his party to an unprecedented victory in 1984, securing a momentous 74.8 percent of parliamentary seats and the confidence of over 50 percent of the electorate. He was then reelected for a second term in 1988, serving until June 1993.

Throughout his tenure, Prime Minister Mulroney steered the country through significant economic transformations, notably spearheading the groundbreaking North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax, both of which left an indelible mark on our nation's economic landscape. His commitment to environmental stewardship was equally profound, evidenced by landmark agreements on acid rain with the United States, pioneering legislation safeguarding Canada's natural heritage, and passing the Environmental Protection Act. Moreover, his principled stance against apartheid in South Africa exemplified Canada's unwavering dedication to justice and human rights on the global stage.

In honoring Prime Minister Mulroney's legacy, we pay homage to a statesman whose vision and dedication to public service have left an enduring imprint on our country and the world.”
