Cobourg, ON – April 28, 2022 – This morning, flags were lowered to half-mast at all Northumberland County buildings in recognition of the National Day of Mourning. Each year on April 28th, Canadians come together to remember those who have lost their lives, suffered injury or illness on the job, or experienced a work-related tragedy. During the April 20, 2022 meeting of County Council, Council proclaimed April 28, 2022 as the National Day of Mourning in Northumberland County.

"Today, County Council and staff pause to honour those who have been directly impacted by work-related tragedies, as well as the co-workers, friends and family members also affected,” states County Warden Bob Crate. “This annual day of remembrance is a reminder to each of us about our independent and collective responsibility to ensure safe and healthy workplaces, and prevent further work-related injuries, illnesses or loss of life.”

This day was first nationally recognized in 1991, under the Workers Mourning Day Act. Today, the National Day of Mourning is recognized in over 100 countries around the globe.
